Shoppers reach for discount vouchers amid the recession

Bargain hunters are increasingly using the internet to combat the effects of the recession and find the latest banking deals, money off coupons and financial advice, figures showed.

The number of online searches for retail discount vouchers jumped a massive 143 per cent in the final quarter of last year, while visits to banking websites also increased as customers sought the best deals in response to the interest rate cuts.

Hitwise, which tracks one million websites and 30 million search terms every month, also found a decrease in searches for holidays in Eurozone countries and the US, but an increase in searches for cheaper locations such as Turkey, North Africa and India.

Web searches for discount vouchers have increased nearly 50% over the past year as consumers research purchases of everything from restaurants to clothing.

According to research covering more than 4,500 search terms by Hitwise, discount vouchers hit the mainstream in the run up to Christmas, and the voucher market has continued to mature since.
